The Rainmaker

For some reason I have a real need to make an ass out of myself these days and make it public via this blog. A huge part of me thinks this is totally crazy because I’m opening myself up for judgment and ridicule, which as a rule, I try to avoid at all times.

I tend to think I have these wonderfully great ideas, like this blog, but when I try to put them into action the outcome ends up less than I expected. So I end up seriously bummed, or in the worst scenarios, completely embarrassed. Like that time in high school when I was ABSOLUTELY certain a guy liked me. There was no doubt in my mind that this poor guy was probably just shy and needed a little push in the right direction. So I concocted a perfect stalkerish plan and put a rose and note in his locker to wish him a Happy Birthday— and he NEVER acknowledged it. Don’t even ask how I got the locker combo (I missed my true calling as a super spy). But seriously, right? What the hell was I thinking?

So now whenever I start thinking that I have an amazing idea, my natural inclination is to talk myself out of it, because as my unfortunate teenaged-scenario proves, I’m prone to seeing the world only how I want to see it, not how it really is. And when you see the world through rose-colored glasses, you get disappointed A LOT. And people pretty much think you’re an idiot A LOT.

But, this week I was reminded of one of my favorite old movies called “The Rainmaker” (Yes, it’s totally cheesy, but Burt Lancaster is yummy as Starbuck.  And the way he helps Lizzie see her true beauty?  *swoon*).

Starbuck is quite the dreamer and sees the world much in the same way I do (most of the time).  At the end of the movie, Starbuck admits to Lizzie that he’s a fraud and has never made it rain. He goes on to tell her he’s wanted to make it rain his entire life, to make a miracle, but hasn’t been able to make his dream come true.

Lizzie tells him, “You’re all dreams, Starbuck. And it’s no good to live in your dreams.”

He responds with the perfect answer:  “It’s no good to live outside of them.”

And in the end, Starbuck was right. He made it rain.

You do know you’re on the right track right, Seeing the world as you want it to be? I always see my world the way I want it to be knowing eventually it will catch up with my thoughts! It’s always worked, and I’ll continue to expect it to!

Enjoyed reading a couple of your posts this evening. You sound a lot like me, in many ways, but you know what?

“It’s my story and I’m sticking with it!”

In other words, I like dreaming the big dreams, being optimistic, having loads of crazy ideas and so far, life only gets better as time goes on….so why change?

That guy in high school was a fool! Try not to worry too much about what others think – it’s a waste of time. Just let your freak flag fly and go for your dreams!

Don’t fret my love. :) I make an ass out of myself on a regular basis. I chalk it up to growth experience, and the price I have to pay to evolve into the person I’m meant to be. And I firmly believe that without dreams, we have very little purpose. And we NEED purpose to feel good about ourselves and how we’re living our lives. :)

    Great post Miz Nirvana! :)
